About Us

Who We Are

St John the Evangelist United Church reflects the beliefs and traditions of the Anglican, Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian denominations, shared in a warm and welcoming church community. We strive to be an inclusive church that fosters a sense of belonging, family and fellowship, welcoming all, regardless of background, tradition or faith perspective.

Our Beliefs

We believe and trust in God the Father, who created the universe.

We believe and trust in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who has redeemed the world.

We believe and trust in the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God.

We believe and trust in one God — Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer.

Rev Elries Fortuin

Rev Elries Fortuin joined St John’s after years of ministry across Cape Town and Upington, bringing with him a deep calling to serve this community. Originally from Grabouw in the Western Cape, Rev Elries holds a BTh (Hons) from Stellenbosch University and spent two decades in leadership roles outside the church before discerning this as God’s time to serve St John’s full time.

Our History

St John’s began as a Sunday School in Parkmore in 1963. Over time, worship services followed, initially held in a garage. In 1970, a collective vision emerged: that one church should be built to serve all denominations. By 1974, the congregation had committed to a "Search for Unity", pioneering the spirit of ecumenism in the area. In 1998, the church became formally united, using a shared liturgy reflecting Anglican, Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian traditions. St John’s is a proud member of the Church Unity Commission (CUC).
