Our Community
St John’s is committed to serving with dignity, kindness and acceptance — striving to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around us. Through long-standing initiatives and partnerships, we extend practical support and compassion to those most in need.

Each week, our outreach includes an employment introduction service, a soup kitchen, and a jumble shop. During the colder months, funds are raised to provide blankets and jerseys, while beanies and scarves are knitted and distributed with care.

We also support a number of local organisations, including:
-
Phuthaditjhaba Old Age Home
-
Aids Haven
-
Mohaladitwe Old Age Day Care
Every Christmas, children from the COACH orphanages are welcomed to a joyful celebration filled with games, entertainment, lunch, and individual gifts.
Employment Service

For more than forty years, St John’s has sought to respond to real needs in our community. One of the greatest challenges is unemployment, which is why we run a weekly introduction service between prospective employers and employees.

Each Wednesday, job-seekers are registered and interviewed by volunteers, and added to a digital database. Employers are then provided with a personalised list of suitable candidates according to their requirements.

-
For employers: complete our Employment Form or call us on 011 783 1033 to request a tailored list of candidates.
-
For job-seekers: arrive at the church by 09h00 on Wednesdays with a South African ID or valid passport/work permit, along with contactable references.

The Jumble Shop

The Jumble Shop provides a way for pre-loved items to find new homes. Donations of clothing, shoes, homewares, linens, jewellery, tools, furniture, electrical goods — in fact, almost anything in good condition — are gratefully received.

The shop is open every Wednesday at 11:00am, to all who are looking for a bargain, and every item sold helps fund our outreach programmes. In this way, generosity is recycled back into the community.

Food Ministry

Every Wednesday, a warm mug of soup and a sandwich are served to those who are hungry, unemployed, or living on the streets. For those with families at home, extra servings are packaged to take away.

In addition, food parcels are available for the destitute, containing both pantry essentials and toiletries. This ministry is made possible by the faithful support of donors who give food, funds, and time.

Supporting St John’s

The outreach work of St John’s is entirely dependent on the generosity of its members and friends. Financial gifts allow us to purchase food, clothing, and other essentials, ensuring that our ministries continue to serve those in need.
