The seed is the word of God. Luke 8 :8
READING: Mark 4: 26-32
The incredible thing about this reading of one of Jesus’ parable, is that although the farmer ploughs the field and scatters the seed. The seed then sprouts and grows all by itself. The farmer waters the ground. Then the soil produces the stalk and eventually the ear of corn. When fully grown the farmer harvests the grain. Jesus then equates the kingdom of heaven to a mustard seed, which is exceedingly small. But it grows into the largest garden plant, big enough for birds to perch in and build their nests.
Through these parables Jesus is teaching about how God actually uses the farmer but He actually helps the seed to grow and develop into the plant that we see.
In the spreading of God’s word, the seed, we may play a small part, but it is in fact Jesus who prepares the heart and mind of someone to receive that word and He who helps the word to grow and flourish. He often uses us to share God’s love and His word with others. But ultimately, He is in control.
The words of the following hymn beautifully describes this work.
“We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land,
But it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand;
He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain,
The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain.
All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for all His love.”

Prayer
“We thank thee, O Father, for all things bright and good;
The seedtime and the harvest, our life, our health, our food,
No gifts have we to offer for all Thy love imparts,
But that which Thou desirest, our humble, thankful hearts.” Amen
