I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation Philippians 4: 12

READING: Philippians 4: 10-15

Paul is writing from a Roman prison, awaiting sentencing from the emperor. He’s isolated, lonely, worried about the churches he’d established throughout modern-day Turkey and Greece, and yet he claims to be content.  How can that possibly be the case?

Dictionary definitions of contentment describe “a state of happiness and satisfaction, often because you have everything you need”. We are continually told that we can achieve contentment by changing our circumstances - get more money, or this car, or this digital app to organise us, or this insurance policy, take this pill, stay in this hotel, or whatever.

But, God says, don’t change your circumstances, change your heart. The secret to contentment isn’t found in possessions or activities, it’s in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Paul lacked everything the modern world tells us brings contentment.  Summarising Paul’s description of his life as an early Christian missionary, we realise just how much Jesus can help us cope with: “I have been in prison, five times I was given thirty-nine lashes by the Jews; three times I was whipped by the Romans; and once I was stoned. I have been in three shipwrecks, and once spent twenty-four hours in the water. I have been in danger from floods, from robbers, dangers in the cities, in the wilds, on the high seas, and from false friends. There has been work and toil; often I have gone without sleep; without enough food, shelter, or clothing.” (2 Cor.11:23-28)

Paul is not portraying a message of pity, instead, a message of gratitude. Paul is grateful, and thus he is content.

He is grateful for the care of the Philippians for him while in prison; he is also grateful to the Lord for strengthening him. Through that gratitude, he has learned to be content in all things.

There are two words that seem to stand out here. One is learn. Even Paul, the great saint that he was, had to work on achieving contentment. And the other is secret.  Paul is saying, let me give you the secret to an abundant and contented life – gratitude, to God and to the people that He sends to us.

Gratitude and contentment don’t come easily. Being content in any circumstance is hard.

So Paul goes on to say in verse 13: “I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

Through the power of God, we can learn the secret of contentment - gratitude in any situation.

Prayer

Lord God, thank You for the food I eat, the air I breathe, and the people in my life. Help me to live today in awareness of Your presence and gratitude for Your blessings. In Jesus’ name, Amen
