So we’re not giving up. How could we! 2 Corinthians 4:16 (The Message)
READING: 2 Corinthians 4: 16-18
St Paul’s comments in this passage follow his description in vs. 8-12, of his experiences of affliction, perplexity, persecution, and being struck down. Paul’s life was very different to ours, but we all, in our own unique way, face disappointment and suffering that threaten us with discouragement. So how does one not “lose heart,” to use Paul’s very words? Where does one find the power to persevere?
Paul never pretended to be superman. The suffering he experienced truly hurt him, left scars, discouraged him at times. Physically, he seemed to be wasting away. He must have been tempted to think, surely, I’ve done enough?
Paul, though, insists that he is not going to give up. He refuses to give in to the temptation to live in despair. Yes, he is physically wasting away because of his suffering for preaching about Jesus. Inwardly, though, he is being made as good as new every day. He is strong and more determined than ever of his purpose to carry the light of the gospel to the world.
The Message’s translation of verse 18 is, “Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace.“
God is not asking us to ignore trouble, or treat difficulty as though it were pleasure, but to be strengthened to endure so that we can live the life to which He calls us, as we grow in faith, reassured of eternal life with Him.
But note well: this inner transformation does not happen automatically. Carefully observe the relation between v. 16 and v. 18, where Paul contrasts the temporary with the eternal. God’s grace is given to us, but we have to do our part by keeping our eyes fixed on God’s truth.
These thoughts are good ones to have as we start out on a new year. We look back at a year which might have been a hard one, personally; certainly, world events have been cause for anxiety at times. It is good to face the new year with the words “So we’re not giving up.” Followed by the thought “How could we?” (v 2). We have God’s assurance of eternal life of joy with Him, of peace that passes all understanding in the face of any circumstances, of His promise the His grace is sufficient for all things.

Prayer
Lord God, thank You that, as I keep my eyes fixed on Your truth, I will know with joy your steadfast love and unfolding grace. Amen.
