Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Matthew 6: 10

READING: Revelation 15: 1-4

In this passage from Revelations, the imagery describes our belief that God’s kingdom will come, that all people will be united. In verse 4, the writer describes how all will acknowledge Him: “All nations will come and worship before You.” When we read on a daily basis of evil, wars and violence, oppression, exploitation and rejection in our world, this is a vision to hold onto, that gives us hope.

But it is also a personal vision for our own lives, a vision that God is calling us to commit to working for every day of our lives. This is because God’s pattern for humankind has always been that an individual’s commitment to God is followed by that person going out to become a channel of God’s salvation to others. Think of Saul, converted and then spending his days, as Paul, spreading the gospel; think also, way back, of Joseph, saved from conspiracy of death into the good life in Egypt, then using his powerful position to save Israel. The Bible is full of stories of those who have been channels of God’s grace.

God may not have given us the gifts he gave to Paul, Moses, Joseph and others that we read about, but he has given us the ability to serve others in small, daily acts of kindness, compassion and generosity. Treating others with respect, with empathy, forgiveness, and love can be our contribution to creating a world in which God’s kingdom will come on earth.

Prayer

Lord God, may we have the grace to live by the example of Jesus, our Saviour, filled with the spirit of love, kindness, empathy, and unity. Amen
