Teach me Your way, O Lord and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. Psalm 86: 11

READING: Psalm 119: 1-24

Professionals, ranging from health specialists to motor mechanics, tend to have signed and framed certificates on their walls, signifying that they have completed the relevant study programme that qualifies them to solve your problem. It tells you that they have learned everything they need to know to qualify them to take care of you, whether it is fixing your health or your car.

The school of faith is nothing like that. We will only graduate for learning to walk with God when we get to meet Him in heaven. As long as we are on earth, our education continues.

God has given us an all-encompassing manual in His Word, the Bible. Psalm 119: 11 tells us to hide the Word of God in our hearts, in other words, to know the scriptures so well that we develop an automatic understanding of how to live among each other and how we relate to God.

Thankfully, as Christians, God has also given us a private tutor to help us with our study programme – the Holy Spirit. Closer even than any modern-day concept of 24/7 availability, the Holy Spirit lives within us, and convicts, enlightens, empowers and enables us.

In Psalm 86, the psalmist prayed for a heart that would be committed to knowing God. That is a prayer we should all pray.

Prayer

Almighty God, teach me Your ways; help me to listen to the promptings of Your Holy Spirit; open my mind to understand the meaning of the scripture verses for my life, that I may walk in Your truth. In Jesus name, Amen
