The Lord declares, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand,

O house of Israel.” Jeremiah 18 : 6b

In this reading the Lord uses the image of a potter at his wheel and how he can reform the object he is moulding, if at first it does not come out as planned.  His message is for the House of Israel and for all of us who follow, who no longer obey the Laws given to Moses or the Words and teaching of Jesus.  Even as the clay has the potential to be malformed, so has the house of Israel.  The flaws in the moulded object are not an indication that there is something wrong with the clay, but something wrong in the process that happens at that time in the hands of the potter.   But that is not the end of the story because the potter can still remould the clay into the jar he wants.  The Lord says that the flaws in our lives are not the problem, because we are in His hands and He knows us, and believes in us and has a plan for our lives and He can remold us as well. Paul in Romans, 9 : 21 says, “Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?”

Are we ready to hear what our flaws are?  Are we ready to hear God’s honest and full truth about our shortfalls in our walk with Christ?

Reading, studying, and hearing the preached Word of God, should bring us to a deeper knowledge of our Lord and result in a better worship of Him, as we reflect on His abundant love and mercy for us and acknowledge our shortfall in our Christian walk with the Lord, leading to a confession of our sins.   God can change us, as the potter can remold the clay, because of His deep knowledge of us and His great love for us.  We need to be prepared to listen to His voice and be willing to let Him change us and to make an effort on our part to change our lives.

Prayer

Change my heart, O God, make it ever true,

Change my heart, O God, may I be like You.

You are the potter, I am the clay,

Mould me and make me, this is what I pray.

Amen    (SOF 58)
