The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14
READING: 2 John 1: 1-13
The letters of Second and Third John are the shortest books in the Bible, but these small “postcard letters,” have strong messages. Second John teaches us about two great characteristics that our Lord lived out - truth and love.
How do we be loving like Christ, how do we be truthful like Christ?
One of the threats to the early church was a lack of love between fellow Christians. Similarly, this is a threat to us today. As Christians, we often face ‘lack of love’ situations - uncomfortable conversations with someone who questions our faith; difficult discussions with a fellow believer over differing opinions.
This threat is conquered by ‘love in truth’.
John, writing as a church elder, to a lady church member and her children, tells her that they are loved not just by God, but by other believers. John describes them as people “whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth.” (vs 1, & 2). John, and her community, who’ve been changed by the truth, love her.
“Love in truth” is love according to the gospel truth. That’s the message of the gospel. God’s Son didn’t just suffer and die to take our punishment, He was also raised again by the Father, given new life, just like He gives to His followers. That’s the “love in truth”. We are loved, and have love for each other, because we all share in this truth. That’s what John’s telling this lady, and, by extension, us.
A Christian says to another, ‘You’ve been changed by the truth. I’ve been changed by the truth and I will love you uniquely, in a special way, like God loves me in Christ Jesus. I am here for you today, tomorrow, and forever. So far as depends on me, I will be at peace with you.’
John said, let’s not just talk about love; let us show the truth by our actions. (1 John 3:18)

Prayer
Lord, in every decision that I face, in every conversation, I want to know how to be gracious and truthful. I pray that by your Spirit You would change me to be more like Christ. I thank You, Father, for Your love. Amen
