For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2: 10

What a privilege we have as Christians to focus on the tasks Christ Himself has set before us. We believe that He has ordained work for each one of us to do, regardless of our circumstances or abilities. But what exactly are those works, and how do we know what to do?

God Himself sums up the answer in Proverbs 3: 5,6, which says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.”

But, despite our trust in Him,  knowing God’s will for our lives remains an elusive thing – how can we be sure we are working for His good? Maybe we can take some guidance from Micah 6:8, where we are told we should act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. That’s it. God doesn’t tell us exactly what to do, instead He tells us how to be.

When we realise that every moment we have and every cent we own truly belongs to Him, it is easier to humbly relinquish our hold on them and surrender to the gentle guidance of His Holy Spirit.

As the Good Shepherd, God knows where He is leading us. Wherever we find ourselves, whether in rocky places, down in the valley, up on mountain peaks, He is faithful to lead us, forming the character of Christ in us all the while. And as we constantly commit every tiny detail of our day over to Him and always ask for His guidance, He swings wide the doors we were born to walk through – to actively participate in the building of His kingdom.

Prayer

Almighty God, direct my feet, that I might walk in all the works You have prepared for me. Please open my eyes to see exactly where You want me to work for You. All that I have is Yours. Use me in Your service. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
