Daily Devotion 21 January 2026

We know in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purposes.  Roman 8: 28

READING: John 1: 29-37

Our reading today describes how God revealed to John the Baptist who His Son, Jesus, was.   The Lord revealed to him that the person on whom the Holy Spirit would descend like a dove, was Jesus the Christ.  He also revealed to John that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit, all people who would respond to His calling.  The next day John was walking with two of his disciples, when he saw Jesus he claimed, “Look, the Lamb of God!” His disciples immediately followed Jesus.  The Scriptures reveal many incidences where Jesus calls people to be His instruments to continue His work on earth.  Some were called in a dramatic way, where others are called quietly while reading scripture, or who are in prayer alone or with someone else, or during a time of worship or through someone else’s testimony.  Jesus’ first calling of His disciples was through the testament of John the Baptist.  Andrew was one of these and he called his brother, Simon, to meet the Messiah!  (John 1 :40 – 42) Later in Scripture  we read of the dramatic conversion of Saul, who Jesus called Paul, on the road to Damascus. (Acts 9 : 1 – 9 + 17 – 18) The Disciple Philip went to the city Samaria and proclaimed Jesus the Christ and he also performed many miraculous signs.  Many were healed, several evil spirits left people and there was great joy in the city.  When they believed Philip’s preaching and saw the miraculous signs they believed “in the Kingdom of God and the Name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized.” (Acts 8 : 12 – 13). Jesus promised that “ where two or three come together in My Name, there am I with them.  (Matthew 18 : 20).  When a woman with a bleeding problem believed that if she could just touch the hem of Jesus’ cloaked even in the crowd, she would be healed.  Jesus was aware of the touch and said to her, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” (Matthew 9 : 20 – 22)

Even today Jesus calls us by name and baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and if we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, we become children of God, siblings with Jesus.

Prayer

Open our hearts to hear Your calling, make us Your servants and instruments of Your mission here on earth.  May our love for others draw them to know You Lord Jesus, the Son of God.  Amen
