Since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  Hebrews 4: 14

In this passage the Godliness of Jesus is described.   In our first reading, because Jesus is declared to be the Son of God, we are told to hold firmly to the faith to which God has called us and which we share with those around us.  In the time of the Israelites every high priest was appointed to represent the people in all things related to God.  Jesus Himself, was called by God.   Christ did not take on the honour of high priest on himself, but God named Him as His Son and said that He was Jesus’ Father.  In verse eight we read that although God had declared Him to be His Son, Jesus still had to learn obedience to Him to the point of submitting Himself to the Jewish and Roman Authorities, who condemned Him to death on the cross.  This was for the salvation of all people who obeyed Him, then and through the ages until our present time.  During His lifetime Jesus spent many hours in prayer with His heavenly Father, praying for the people He encountered and just conversing with God.  In Jesus’ resurrection God gave Jesus all the glory and the power, and through the Holy Spirit, to live within all believers’ lives and to help them to become more worthy of Jesus’ love.  In this way Jesus empowers us to do His will and to share in His ministry.  We read in 1 John 5 : 1 – 3, “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves His Child as well.”   In James 4 : 8 we read, “Come near to God and He will come near to You.” and in 1 Peter 1 : 3 we read, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we know You are our loving Saviour who died to redeem and save all men and that because You gave Your life willing to suffer death on the cross, You offered salvation for all men and because of this we too shall live to honour and praise our Father God, through You.  Amen
