“I am the light of the world.” John 9:5

In the beginning, light was the first sign of God’s creation. “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3)

That same Creator who initiated light at creation then brought spiritual illumination into human hearts through sending his Son for our salvation. St Paul explains it so clearly; “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)

Jesus Christ, himself, stated, “I am the light of the world.” (John 9:5)

Our Lord promises that whoever follows him will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)

With so many promises vying for our attention in this secularised world, we can easily get wrapped up in the glittering lights, overlooking the wondrous light of Christ. We need to be intentional about keeping our destination clear, trusting the guiding light of our Saviour and the itinerary he has laid out for us. So whenever we find ourselves feeling lost or in a dark place, let us pause and turn back toward the light of Christ. We can find his light in his Word, as we read in Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path”.

Jesus is the light that never goes out; “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)

He is a light that restores hope and gets us back on course; “The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

We are also called to be a source of light, bringing hope to others by our example. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

Prayer

Lord, Jesus Christ, show me how I can be a transforming light of love and kindness to the people You have placed in my life. Help me cherish Your light of life, a light I can always count on to guide me through my dark moments. Amen
